My favourite part of studying with Walbrook is definitely the flexibility that the online degree offers. I think without that there wouldn't have been away for me to achieve this level of qualification. I haven't felt a massive change in my routine and don't feel like I have to give up much either to fit the studying in.
Dean shares how Walbrook’s flexible online MBA Finance degree fits around his 9–5 job and family life – from studying in the evenings to building a routine that doesn't sacrifice family time with his son.
My name's Dean Piper. I'm 35 years old and I'm studying the MBA in Finance and have been on it for about a year now.
Why did you choose Walbrook for your degree?
I have experience with Walbrook through professional qualifications. I went from nothing to Level 6 Advanced Diploma with them, so I had trust in what Walbrook can offer and thought it was a natural follow on to move into the master's.
Why did you choose to study an online degree?
The flexibility of working online is really good for me because I like to study later on in the evening. My wife's asleep, my son's asleep and having a young family, being able to do what I want in my own time is really helpful. I'm a night person and that really works for me.
What's your routine as an online degree student?
I work a predominantly 9-5 job. I generally get up, make sure my son's off to school okay, and then set into work for the day. I spend the evening with my son and wife so I make sure I have the family time and then do the studying when they've both gone to sleep. I haven't felt a massive change in my routine and don't feel like I have to give up much either to fit the studying in.
What surprised you most about online degree study?
I was a bit worried about, when I started, thinking that the level of work would be too demanding and I initially considered a longer course time frame. But when I settled into it and sort of realised how manageable it was around my working life, that was probably the most surprising bit.
What's your favourite part about studying at Walbrook?
My favourite part of studying [with Walbrook] is definitely the flexibility that the online [degree] offers. I think without that there wouldn't have been away for me to achieve this level of qualification.
Any advice for future Walbrook online degree students?
I think the biggest tip would be just to make sure that you allocate the time and set a routine to do your studying. For me, knowing that the evenings are when I can do it means I don't feel guilty, if I want to do something in the weekend, I can have a night off here and there because I know that I have that protected, structured time to do my studying and it's definitely work for me.
I am currently in full time employment, so being able to study at my own time and being able to be in control of my own studying was really important, and Walbrook provided that as part of their online degrees. Their model really works because you're able to juggle it around your current lifestyle more than the typical degree. Whether you're studying, whether you're part time, or whether you're parents, I would say just go for it.
Aleksandra shares how Walbrook’s flexible online MBA fits around her career, life, and ambitions – from supportive entry requirements to building a close-knit student community.
I am currently in full time employment, so being able to study at my own time and being able to be in control of my own studying was really important, and Walbrook provided that as part of their online degrees.
And a really important thing for me was how flexible they are with the entry requirements, because everyone's on a different journey and everyone has different past experiences, past qualifications or work experiences.
I have been out of education for a while, so for me, it was really important that they considered that, and they took that part of the acceptance process to the MBA programme.
What’s something you were worried about before starting, that turned out better than expected?&
One thing that did worry me a little bit was the degree of self-teaching that I would have to do. I did worry about, given that it's an online degree, you don't necessarily have the ability to attend lectures or speak to tutors, but I was quickly reminded that is actually not the case. There's plenty of available resources that you can actually utilise, again at your own time, without having to feel like you're alone.
And during this journey, I have actually been able to meet quite a lot of people that are also on the online programme. And we've kind of built our own community, so we don't feel as alone as we thought, as when you're studying an online degree versus the in-person campus students.
What surprised you most about online learning?
What surprised me most was the degree of flexibility. I knew it was going to be flexible, given that it's an online degree. However, I didn't quite appreciate the degree of the flexibility, and also not being necessarily bound by any live lecture times or by any tutor support. Whilst I do have tutor support available, I get to decide at what point I want to use it and for me that's really important.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your life. How do you juggle study, work, and everything else?
A typical day in the life is actually relatively simple. I wake up and I go to work, go into the office. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the lucky ones that gets to work from home too often. So, for me, having again, an online degree was really important so I can juggle my time. So, once I get back from the office, life admin takes over and then onto my MBA.
So, I get on to that until late evening. But often because of my full-time job, I may have late evenings, so it allows me to kind of juggle my time. But evenings I tend to do more for kind of online module work or any self-assessment and then juggle that depending on with basis. And I try to have a life somewhere in between.
How has being able to study your way anytime, anywhere helped you reach your goals?
One of my goals was to really be able to manoeuvre studying whilst working full time and being able to study anywhere at any time meant that often I can actually study whilst I'm on holiday, or whilst I'm having a bit of an empty weekend, and that model I think really facilitates being able to take a course and an online degree at any point in your life.
Whether you're fresh out of one degree and going to another, or whether you're a full-time employee like myself, or any other person that's trying to entice a new journey.
That model really works because you're able to juggle it around your current lifestyle rather than the typical degree, which means you have to adapt your lifestyle to the degree, which in this case, it's not the case.
The course content is engaging and easy to follow, and the lecturers are really responsive, which makes a huge difference when you’re studying online. I like that there’s pacing built in to keep you on track, but also the flexibility to fit around work, life and kids. I’ve really learnt a lot that I can already put into practice in my role at work. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking to do an online MBA.
