A postgraduate degree is designed to provide you with a deeper expertise in a specific field. At postgraduate level, you build on foundational knowledge gained during an undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience. A postgraduate degree aims to equip you with the skills and confidence to excel in the modern world of work or to pursue further research opportunities.
Many students take a postgraduate degree shortly after completing an undergraduate degree, to cement their knowledge and develop their specialised skillsets. At Walbrook, you can study with us whether you're transitioning directly from your undergraduate studies or returning to education after a break.
A master's degree is one of the most common postgraduate study options allowing students to specialise in a specific field or area of study. The term ‘master’s’ can refer to either a postgraduate taught (PGT) or a postgraduate research (PGR) degree.
At Walbrook, we offer two types of PGT programmes: the Master of Science (MSc) and the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other degree providers may also offer PGT options such as the Master of Arts (MA), or PGR pathways like the Master of Research (MRes).
Pursuing a master's degree can enhance career prospects, deepen knowledge in a chosen field, and provide opportunities for further academic and professional advancement.
My name's Dean Piper. I'm 35 years old and I'm studying the MBA in Finance and have been on it for about a year now.
Why did you choose Walbrook for your degree?
I have experience with Walbrook through professional qualifications. I went from nothing to Level 6 Advanced Diploma with them, so I had trust in what Walbrook can offer and thought it was a natural follow on to move into the master's.
Why did you choose to study an online degree?
The flexibility of working online is really good for me because I like to study later on in the evening. My wife's asleep, my son's asleep and having a young family, being able to do what I want in my own time is really helpful. I'm a night person and that really works for me.
What's your routine as an online degree student?
I work a predominantly 9-5 job. I generally get up, make sure my son's off to school okay, and then set into work for the day. I spend the evening with my son and wife so I make sure I have the family time and then do the studying when they've both gone to sleep. I haven't felt a massive change in my routine and don't feel like I have to give up much either to fit the studying in.
What surprised you most about online degree study?
I was a bit worried about, when I started, thinking that the level of work would be too demanding and I initially considered a longer course time frame. But when I settled into it and sort of realised how manageable it was around my working life, that was probably the most surprising bit.
What's your favourite part about studying at Walbrook?
My favourite part of studying [with Walbrook] is definitely the flexibility that the online [degree] offers. I think without that there wouldn't have been away for me to achieve this level of qualification.
Any advice for future Walbrook online degree students?
I think the biggest tip would be just to make sure that you allocate the time and set a routine to do your studying. For me, knowing that the evenings are when I can do it means I don't feel guilty, if I want to do something in the weekend, I can have a night off here and there because I know that I have that protected, structured time to do my studying and it's definitely work for me.
Postgraduate study has a proven impact on earning power. According to the UK Government’s Graduate Labour Market Statistic (2024), postgraduates earn on average £5,000 more per year than undergraduates. A master’s degree is not just about knowledge – it’s an investment in your long-term career growth.
Whether through distance learning or on-campus study, postgraduate education gives students the chance to specialise, complete independent study, and prepare for major changes in career or further research.
Your first degree at a university
Usually last three years (sometimes three to four years)
Cover a broad range of subjects at undergraduate level
Entrance requirements often include A levels or equivalent
Taken after a first degree for further study in a particular subject
Usually last one to two years and are more intensive
Typically require a first degree for entry
May involve a dissertation, thesis, or independent research
A postgraduate course is more than the next step – it’s a turning point. It can:
Take your career further – 90% of postgraduates were in employment in 2024, compared with 87.6% of graduates and 68% of non-graduates.
Step into specialist fields and senior roles – 79% of postgraduates work in high-skilled jobs, compared with 68% of graduates.
Boost your earning power – with a median salary of £47,000 for postgraduates, compared to £42,000 for graduates.
Prepare you for further study – from taught master’s to research-based degrees that require students to complete a dissertation, independent research, or even produce original research.

A master’s degree is the most common type of postgraduate study. It’s taken after an undergraduate degree (your first degree) and usually lasts one to two years. Master’s options include taught courses such as an MSc, MBA, or MA, as well as research degrees that involve more independent study and even original research. So while all master’s are postgraduate, not all postgraduate courses are master’s – there are also diplomas and certificates at this level.
While both a diploma and a degree are recognised qualifications at an advanced level of study, a postgraduate diploma usually covers a more specialised area of knowledge. Diplomas tend to have shorter durations than a full postgraduate degree, often focusing on skills training in a specific field.
Postgraduates in the UK consistently earn more than those with only an undergraduate degree. According to the UK Government’s Graduate Labour Market Statistics (2024), most students with a master’s earn around £5,000 more per year than graduates with a first degree.
Salaries vary by subject area, experience, and role, but the trend is clear: completing a postgraduate qualification increases your earning potential and opens the door to senior positions.
